During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw MC, also known as Sam Manekshaw and Sam Bahadur (Sam the Brave), served as the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army. He was also the first Indian Army commander to be appointed to the rank of field marshal. After serving in the British Indian Army during World War II, he went on to serve in five conflicts over the course of four decades.
Manekshaw enrolled in the Indian Military Academy’s Dehradun first intake in 1932. He received a commission into the 12th Frontier Force Regiment’s 4th Battalion. He received the Military Cross for valour during World War II. after the 1947 division of India.
